We’re diving deeper into the topic of fast track construction to help our readers manage their projects more effectively. Rapid-drying concrete is only one component of a successful fast track project and there are many moving parts that present challenges even relative to traditional design-bid-build construction. The owner, designer and contractors all have a responsibility to anticipate these challenges to get their facilities operational as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Fast Track Construction Booming in Texas and Around the Country

Dallas Magazine's Charlie Myers published a piece earlier this year detailing the rising prominence of fast track construction and the sheer size of investment in the practice. The article notes the value of construction starts could reach roughly $712 billion this year and that the industries involved, healthcare, higher education, industrial/warehouse, and mixed-use/retail, are all beneficiaries of fast track construction (and constructing at a frantic pace). As we’ve discussed in previous blogs, there are references to design-build and getting a general contractor involved in starting construction even before final designs are laid out. In today’s era of construction, speed to market is the name of the game.

Fast Track Construction Seeing Success in Buffalo, New York

A Business Journal (Buffalo region) article explains the newfound popularity of fast track construction in upstate New York. A partner of Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP in Buffalo claimed fast track construction is in style and reduces costs for owners by 25 to 45 percent. The piece also mentions some of the challenges of fast track construction, including the insane pace designs are created and financial decisions are made. The key, Allissa Kline notes, is effective communication.
